KOWAW | EAGLE

“Kowaw” is the title of the dance piece created by artists Taboeh a ‘Oebay Tataysi and Hsin-Hsuan Yu in 2024. The word comes from the language of the Saisiyat indigenous people of Taiwan and means “eagle”.

The eagle is interpreted as a symbol of the soul: freedom, migration, rupture, and rebirth.

Through their moving bodies, both artists navigate life’s difficulties and elevate their dance beyond limits. As time flows, we continue to journey through experiences, generating new souls, learning to accept impermanence and finding serenity. Faced with a constantly changing world, we seek to renew hope and rebuild a sense of belonging.

About the Exhibition

At the beginning of the creative process, Taiwanese photographer Cheng-Chang Kuo immortalized this journey, from the photo studio and rehearsal space to the stage. Through his lens, he captured every phase of the journey: from struggle to transcendence, in this piece marked by the fusion of indigenous culture and contemporary dance.

Later, at the Danza en el Camino festival, Spanish photographer Ana Yñáñez continued this visual narrative across northern Spain, in regions marked by deep historical, cultural, and spiritual roots. Her camera captures the power of rebirth, hope, and resilience coming from Taiwan, bringing this visual record back to the island.

This exhibition thus brings together the extensive journey of the work, and through the complementary perspectives of Cheng-Chang Kuo and Ana Yñáñez, we bear witness to those eternal moments that reflect dance, ritual, identity, and the journey.
